FROM THE RABBI’S DESK: SHELACH

To say that anti-Israel feelings among Jews are a recent phenomenon is to deny the authenticity of this week’s Torah that deals with those who would boycott entry into the Promised Land. Of course, we are referring to the ten spies whose report consisting of half-truths convinces practically an entire people to abandon their quest to go to Canaan.

What is interesting in statements of the ten spies regarding their reluctance to enter the land of Israel is the fear that they are perceived by the inhabitants and by themselves as grasshoppers. In other words, they are lacking in self-confidence, and the lack of courage translates into demoralization and self-defeat.

One of my rabbinic colleagues commenting on this section of the Torah reading in translating the phrase which connotes the comparison of Israel to a grasshopper states that the self-perception of the people of Israel is even more derogatory as the Hebrew of this phrase is referring to them as lice.  There is a similar phrase appearing in the book of Isaiah that speaks of the people of Israel in the same vein.
In any event, self-debasement is a disease that pervades the minds of those Jews who support all causes except their own especially in regard to the state of Israel. From the Neturei Karta to the radical anti-Israel forces in the Jewish community, the saga of the biblical spies takes on a modern day context.  We must remain vigilant like Caleb and Joshua in defending Israel.
