FROM THE RABBI’S DESK – TAZRIA-METZORA:

It is well known that the Talmud considers the plague of Tzoraat, mistranslated as leprosy, as punishment for the dissemination of Leshon Hara, evil speech. The consequences of evil speech are well understood, and the ramifications of such activity are obvious.  But what happens when evil speech causes its victim to be treated like a leper, to be ostracized from the community around?

The BDS movement of boycott divest and sanction in reference to Israel is a prime example of the spreader of evil speech, and the victim of course is the Jewish state. The goal is to isolate it, and expel it from the community of nations. The repetition of the Big Lie, that Israel is an apartheid state, is believed by more and more people including members of our own community. We have to remember that the success of the Holocaust against the Jews was in no short way based on the insidious propaganda against the Jew that appeared in media outlets such as the Der Sturmer, the Nazi rag.

As we approach Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut, we are ever mindful of those who wish us harm, be it through the terror tactics of Hamas or by the word of mouth of the BDS movement. Unlike the leper who undergoes a period of quarantine and atonement, there is no tolerance allowed to those who wish to besmirch the State of Israel and the Jewish people by extension.

With the blessing of G-d, Israel remains a strong state marking its place in the community of nations despite enemy efforts to treat it as a pariah. May Israel continue to grow and to prosper.
